Overlooked in last week’s end of the year summary of arts highlights was the exceptional accomplishment of San Diego Symphony musicians, who last summer put on their own pops concert series in Mission Bay. Working with virtually no lead time for planning and marketing, the out-of-work musicians put together and managed a highly respectable nine-week season.
Starting with a critical $100,000 grant from Home Federal Savings & Loan, the musicians sold enough tickets to cover all costs and pay every player about $400 a week. By-products of the musician-run season was a new sound system and a synthetic canvas orchestra shell that provided the best acoustics at Hospitality Point in memory.
