The World : E. German Leader in Paris

East German leader Erich Honecker conferred with President Francois Mitterrand in Paris on disarmament issues. Honecker and Mitterrand praised the U.S.-Soviet treaty signed last month banning medium-range nuclear missiles in Europe. However, a French spokesman said Mitterrand told Honecker that France’s short-range missiles are not up for negotiation and that it is too soon in the disarmament process to focus debate on this category of weapons. Honecker, the first East German head of state to visit the capital of one of the World War II Allies that oversee the divided city of Berlin, has proposed that the two Germanys eliminate short-range nuclear weapons from their territory.
