Nervous security police hit and shoved members of British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher’s staff today as a throng of well-wishers pressed to get near her in the city of Kano.

Friendly crowds of hundreds of thousands greeted Thatcher’s arrival in the ancient city of Kano in northwestern Nigeria, but the incidents occurred when security police--apparently not sure who was friend or foe--tried to block the path of members of her entourage, witnesses said.

British reporters said Thatcher’s chief press secretary, Bernard Ingham, was hit in the stomach by a rifle butt but was unharmed. Other staff members were pushed and shoved by the police.
