Three scientists Thursday were awarded the 1987 Hammer Prize for cancer research by Dr. Armand Hammer, chairman and chief executive of Occidental Petroleum Corp.

Sharing the 1987 prize are Dr. Bernard Fisher, distinguished service professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, Dr. Donald Metcalf of the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research in Melbourne, Australia, and Dr. Malcolm A.S. Moore, of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York.

Hammer, who serves as chairman of President Reagan’s cancer panel, presented the awards at a luncheon Thursday in Los Angeles. He cited Fisher for his clinical trials research in breast and colo-rectal cancer and Metcalf and Moore for their work with hormones involved in control of the production of blood elements in the bone marrow, expected to have major benefits in cancer therapy.
