Gunnar Engellau; Directed Rise of Volvo

Gunnar Engellau, 80, the industrialist who built Volvo into a top world auto maker. Engellau came to Volvo as a civil engineer in 1956 and served as managing director until 1971. He stayed on as president of the board for another seven years and retired in 1978. When he began at Volvo, it produced 31,000 cars a year. By the time he retired, he had introduced Volvos to the U.S. and European markets and production soared to 201,000.
