Soviet Man Jailed for Killing Penguins
A Soviet citizen who, in a drunken frenzy, killed five penguins has been sentenced to five years in a strict-regime labor camp, a newspaper from the Baltic republic of Lithuania reported.
Saulyus Baltrimas killed the penguins after drinking two bottles of vodka with a friend employed as a guard at an aquarium in the Lithuanian port of Klaipeda, the Sovietskaya Litva newspaper said in Sunday’s edition, which reached Moscow on Friday.
As the guard slept in a drunken stupor, Baltrimas inadvertently got locked into the penguin cage and kicked five of the birds to death, wringing their necks for good measure.
He was fined $13,700 for damage to the aquarium premises during his rampage last Sept. 16.
