EMPIRE, Colo. —
An avalanche buried part of a busy highway in the Rocky Mountains on Saturday. One car was shoved over the side and plunged 500 feet but the driver escaped with scrapes and bruises, officials said.
Richard C. Rohwer, 49, of Lakewood, who was alone in the car, declined treatment for his injuries, officials said.
“He was very fortunate,” said Ed Fink, a member of the highway maintenance crew clearing the snow and debris off U.S. 40, about 30 miles west of Denver.
