Nearly three of four Washington-area residents say they have given some spare change when confronted on the street by beggars, a survey published Sunday said.

The Washington Post Magazine poll also showed that slightly more than half of the 70% who said they gave money to panhandlers reported paying $1 or more the last time they gave.

There are at least 6,000 homeless people in Washington and other estimates run far higher.
