Philippine troops killed 25 Communist rebels in their biggest battle in months as the country headed into the final week of a bloody election campaign, the military reported. Three soldiers were killed and nine wounded in the daylong battle, in the northern town of Balbalan. In Manila, President Corazon Aquino appealed for an end to the political violence that has claimed more than 60 lives since the campaign began Dec. 1. Local elections will be held next Monday. Meanwhile, mayoral candidate Agustin Quirao was killed in central Iloilo province after four men stopped him in his jeep, the military said.
