Funeral Mass for Loyola Chaplain

A funeral Mass will be said at 10 a.m. Saturday for the Rev. Alfred J. Kilp, a priest and educator at Loyola Marymount University in Westchester at the university’s Sacred Heart Chapel. Father Kilp died Monday after a long battle with cancer. He was 79. Burial will take place Tuesday in Santa Clara.

Born in Newport, Ky., Father Kilp entered the Jesuit Sacred Heart Novitiate in Los Gatos, Calif., in 1928, after studies at Loyola. He was ordained in St. Mary’s Cathedral in San Francisco in 1942, and served as an Army chaplain in Europe during World War II and later in Japan and Korea during the Korean War.

Before and after the war he served Loyola as a member of the biology faculty, as dean of men, athletic moderator and superior of the Jesuit Community. Father Kilp was a member of the California National Guard, retiring in 1968 with the rank of lieutenant colonel. In the last 21 years, he was chaplain and director of the university’s Alumni Relations Office.
