U.S. ambassador to Israel Thomas R. Pickering will be reassigned this summer and replaced by another longtime Foreign Service professional, William A. Brown, Administration sources said. Pickering, who is winding up three years of service in Israel, will be promoted to undersecretary of state for management, the sources said, replacing Ronald I. Spiers, who is expected to be named ambassador to Canada. Pickering recently had sharp exchanges with Israeli officials over the use of lethal weapons by security forces facing Palestinian demonstrators.
