Spain Tells Ortega It Seeks Stronger Anti-Contra Stand
Spanish Prime Minister Felipe Gonzalez promised Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega on Tuesday that he will work for a more active European stand against U.S. financial aid to the Contras, the government said.
However, Spain withheld a decision on Ortega’s request for it to join an international committee to supervise a proposed cease-fire with the rebels. The cease-fire is part of a regional peace plan signed Aug. 7 by five Central American presidents.
Ortega, on a two-day visit to Madrid as part of a European trip, is seeking support for an end to Washington’s financial backing of the rebels.
