Jordan Calls for Talks on Mideast

UNITED NATIONS — Jordan, speaking for all Arab states, called Wednesday for new efforts to convene an international peace conference on the Middle East, which Israel has again rejected.
Abdullah Salah, the Jordanian delegate, said in the U.N. Security Council that the conference should make a settlement that would ensure Israel’s withdrawal from Arab lands occupied in the 1967 and 1973 wars, “especially the city of Jerusalem.”
The council resumed debate on the unrest in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. In a report last Friday, Secretary General Javier Perez de Cuellar also advocated an international peace conference.
