Raymond Williams, a cultural historian who championed arts for the working class, is dead at 66, his college at Cambridge University said.

Jesus College, where Williams was professor of drama from 1974 to 1983, said he died Tuesday at his Saffron Walden home, northeast of London. The cause of death was not stated.

In the 1960s Williams was the main voice of the New Left in Britain and he defended students who demanded that universities should be run more democratically.
