A 24-hour strike partially paralyzed commerce and transportation in Peru and triggered clashes between protesters and riot police that reportedly left one person dead and dozens injured. The Communist-led General Workers’ Confederation of Peru, the nation’s largest labor group, called the strike to pressure President Alan Garcia into indexing wages to price increases. Inflation is expected to reach 200% this year. A strike supporter, Hugo Pariona Colonia, 30, was shot and killed in Huancayo during rioting that also left 33 people injured, the newspaper El Comercio reported.
