Reagan’s State of the Union
President Reagan has once again substituted rhetoric for reality. His claim to have restored this nation’s status as a world leader simply does not jibe with the facts.
In the past, nations of Central America almost automatically aligned themselves with our country. Today, despite massive amounts of aid designed to influence them, these nations have fashioned an independent policy, the Arias Plan, which runs directly counter to the Reagan Administration’s enamorment with military solutions. The nations of Latin America have wrested the mantle of leadership from this country, mainly because they seek peaceful solutions to conflict.
