PUEBLA, Mexico —
Nearly 10,000 auto workers returned to their jobs at the Volkswagen of Mexico plant this week after accepting a 15% wage hike.
The salary increase will be retroactive to Jan. 1, union and management officials announced. Workers had demanded a 15% hike retroactive to Dec. 16, but accepted management’s offer of 5 1/2 days’ salary as compensation.
Volkswagen officials originally offered a 10% salary increase retroactive to Jan. 1, which the plant’s 9,700 workers rejected.
The automobile workers union waged an eight-week strike at the Puebla plant last fall.
Puebla is 81 miles east of Mexico City.
