India became Asia’s second nuclear maritime power as Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi accepted delivery of a Soviet-made Victor I class submarine at the Vishakhapatnam naval base on the Bay of Bengal. The nuclear submarine had sailed from Vladivostok with an Indian crew and Soviet trainers. The vessel is equipped with 24 torpedoes but does not carry nuclear weapons. China is the only other Asian nation with nuclear-powered warships.
