120 Reportedly Died in Munitions Train Blast in North Korea
A military train loaded with a large quantity of Chinese munitions exploded in December in North Korea, the top U.S. military commander in South Korea confirmed Wednesday.
“We know that it happened,” Gen. Louis C. Menetrey said, but provided no further details.
Sing Tao Jih Pao, an independent Chinese-language newspaper in Hong Kong, reported Wednesday that 120 people were killed and up to 5,000 injured when the munitions train was blown up by rebels opposed to Kim Jong Il, son of North Korean President Kim Il Sung.
Menetrey did not say how he obtained the information, but units under his command closely monitor military activities in North Korea.
