Eleven of 27 Italian soccer fans who tried to bring an arsenal of arms and explosives into a rival stadium were convicted, fined and sentenced to prison in Genoa, Italy, but the jail terms were immediately suspended.

The supporters of Italian second-division team Modena had been arrested when police found them in their motor coach with homemade bombs, knives, clubs and firecrackers during a routine check before a championship match in Genoa. The defendants claimed they planned to use the weapons to defend themselves against Genoese fans, who they claim had attacked them during a previous match between the teams.
