How to Handle Child’s Allowance

Share

I was surprised at the way parents feel about allowances for their children (Life, Jan. 23). We felt that children were entitled to an allowance every week regardless of attitude or grades. People receive their salary every week, wives get their money for running the house, so in that vein children deserve their allowance. It gives them a feeling of dignity and teaches them to handle money.

But we also had “chore” money. If they wanted extra money, they did certain chores. This enabled them to “work,” and it also kept them from having to ask us for money for a movie, eating out, etc.
