Thomas Schoenlebe of East Germany set a world indoor record in the 400 meters Friday night with a time of 45.05 seconds, breaking his own mark of 45.41.

Walter McCoy was second at 46.53, followed by James Butler in 46.79.

Canadian sprinter Ben Johnson, the world record-holder at 100 meters, pulled a thigh muscle while winning the 60-meter dash. Johnson won in 6.50, after slowing in the final 5 meters. Johnson holds the world record of 6.41 in the 60.

Johnson’s trainer, Charlie Francis, said the runner had suffered a “slight strain, but at this time we’re not sure how bad it is.”

Francis said he was not sure whether Johnson, who won his semifinal heat in 6.45, would be able to compete as scheduled in a meet on Sunday in Karlsruhe.

“Right now, I’d say he won’t be able to run,” Francis said.

Ingo Hoeffgen, an employee at the hotel where Johnson is staying, said the sprinter arrived back from the meet under his own power.

In other results, Mark McKoy of Canada won the 60-meter hurdles in 7.50. Tonie Campbell was second in 7.57.

Larry Myricks won the long jump at 26-5 3/4. Dietmar Haaf of West Germany was second at 25-8 3/4.
