USIU Defeats UCLA, 9-8, With Key Double in 8th

A two-run double by Gerry Benavides and a sacrifice fly by Kevin Pahan in the eighth inning rallied United States International University to a 9-8 victory over No. 12 UCLA in a nonleague baseball game at Players Field Sunday afternoon.

USIU right fielder, Ray Plantier, tied the game, 6-6, in the seventh inning with a three-run homer. UCLA (5-1) scored twice in the eighth inning, on a walk and a wild pitch, to take an 8-6 lead. Benavides hit his double with no outs to tie the game at 8-8 and then scored on Pahan’s fly ball to right field.

Plantier was 2 for 4 with 4 RBIs and scored twice. Pahan was 2 for 3 with 1 RBI to lead USIU (2-1).

San Diego State rallied from an 8-0 deficit to defeat UC Riverside, 11-9, in a nonconference game at Smith Field.

Designated hitter Chuck McInnis was 3 for 3 with 3 RBIs. First baseman Harry Henderson was 3 for 4 with 3 RBIs and scored twice to lead the Aztecs (2-1).
