Hurricane Winds Lash Britain; 2 Die
Hurricane-force winds hammered Britain and Ireland today, killing at least two people, cutting power, toppling trees and blowing a bus into the sea.
Winds gusting up to 100 m.p.h. swept in from the Atlantic in the early hours across Ireland, Scotland, western England and Wales and roared east toward London.
The weather center issued gale warnings 24 hours ahead of time in contrast to October, when hurricane winds swept unexpectedly across Britain, killing 17 people and causing widespread damage.
Initial damage appeared heaviest in Ireland and Northern Ireland, where gales toppled trees and power lines, blocking roads and cutting electricity. Power outages left at least 12,000 homes without electricity in Northern Ireland.
Police said a man was killed when a tree fell on him in Dorgheda, Ireland. In a similar accident, another man was killed when 90-m.p.h. winds blew a tree onto his car in Tavistock, southwestern England.
