AIDS and Gay Bathhouses

I was thrilled to read your article, “The AIDS Debate: Another View” (Metro, Jan. 18). I have been waiting for a long time now to read in a major newspaper another point of view regarding the HIV virus being the cause of AIDS.

Finally, thanks to your article, we now have the opinion of an eminent researcher, Peter Duesberg, a molecular biologist at UC Berkeley, who believes that human immunodeficiency virus is not the sole cause of AIDS. There are others, too, who agree with him and feel this may be slowing the chances of finding a cure for the disease.

This at least gives an argument as to why people should be tested for the HIV antibodies. None of us, especially the medical profession, should assume anything about this disease. We should all keep our minds open to other possibilities.
