‘Wanted’ Posters Anger Brazilian Lawmakers
Posters criticizing members of Congress for their anti-labor stance are causing a political storm in Brazil.
“Wanted: Traitors of the People” the posters read. They also show the photos, names and telephone numbers of 27 federal deputies who the Workers Confederation says have voted against labor rights in the debates on a new constitution.
One infuriated deputy who appears on the poster, Gastone Righi, has threatened retaliation. “If anything happens to my wife and children, I’ll confront them with a machine gun,” he said.
Police say they will remove the posters, denounced by congressional leader Ulysses Guimaraes as defamatory.
However, for the moment, the 200,000 posters remain pasted throughout the industrial city of Sao Paulo, and some passers-by jot down names and numbers.
