Tehran Radio said that Iranian forces fired on American helicopters shepherding a convoy of four U.S.-registered Kuwaiti tankers through the Persian Gulf, forcing the aircraft to flee. But a U.S. military official in the gulf said he was unaware of any encounter between U.S. and Iranian forces, and a Pentagon spokesman in Washington also said there was no evidence of such an attack Friday night. Navy pool reporters with the convoy said the sound of anti-aircraft guns was detected that night after two Iraqi missiles narrowly missed the convoy. But they said it was unclear whether the shooting was at U.S. helicopters or in reaction to the Iraqi missiles.
