Japan’s controversial killing of 300 Antarctic whales for research will continue despite a vote against the hunt by the International Whaling Commission, government officials said today.

“We have no intention of suspending the research whaling,” said Takashi Sato, Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. “There were some votes in favor of the research whaling and Japan is not isolated.” The London-based commission announced Monday a 19-6 vote to urge Japan to stop its government-subsidized killing of minke whales in the Antarctic.
