A memorial service will be held Thursday, at 1:30 p.m., at the Little Chapel of the Dawn in Santa Monica for Ralph Flanagan, a swimmer on the 1932 and 1936 U.S. Olympic teams, who died Feb. 8 at age 70. Flanagan at one time held every freestyle record from 220 yards to the mile. A member of the Swimming Hall of Fame, Flanagan served as aquatic safety director for the American Red Cross from 1962-1980. Flanagan, who lived in Los Alamitos, was born in Miami in 1917 and graduated from the University of Texas.
