A U.S. envoy met with Argentine President Raul Alfonsin on Wednesday in a signal of American concern over Britain’s plan to hold military maneuvers in the disputed Falkland Islands in March, diplomats said.

Robert S. Gelbard, deputy assistant secretary of state for Inter-American affairs, met with Alfonsin after meeting Tuesday night with Foreign Minister Dante Caputo.

Argentina has said it will ask for emergency meetings of the U.N. Security Council and the Organization of American States in an attempt to prevent the military activity.

Argentina invaded the Falklands in April, 1982, expelling a small British garrison, but was forced to surrender 10 weeks later after a British counterattack.
