President Reagan today pledged America will keep its troops in Europe and maintain its nuclear umbrella “strong and up to date” in the defense of the Atlantic Alliance.

In an address broadcast on Worldnet and the Voice of America as a prelude to a summit meeting in Brussels next week with NATO heads of state, Reagan told his European audience: “An attack on you is an attack on us.” He declared that the new U.S.-Soviet arms agreement “is a victory for NATO” while recognizing it has caused some worry about Soviet military advantages.
