The world’s largest black religious organization will begin construction in March on its world center headquarters, church officials said.

The $9.2-million development for the National Baptist Convention U.S.A. Inc. is expected to be completed in April, 1989, said T.J. Jemison, president of the organization.

More than 40,000 convention members are expected to attend dedication ceremonies two months later, he said.

“With 7.7 million members, the National Baptist Convention has grown to the point where the leadership decided we need a central headquarters,” Jemison said.

The 75,000-square-foot building will contain a 2,000-seat chapel and will be crowned by a 225-foot spire.
