The 81-year-old mother of Sen. Richard G. Lugar (R-Ind.) was reported missing overnight after failing to return home from a church group meeting but turned up safe today 200 miles away in Springfield, Ill., the senator’s Indianapolis office said.

Bertha Caldwell became disoriented while driving home from the Wednesday night meeting at Butler University, located about five miles from her home, and eventually wound up on Interstate 74 and drove across western Indiana into Illinois.

Lugar’s office said the woman regained her composure and called authorities when she reached Springfield, 200 miles away. Family members drove to Illinois this morning to pick her up.
