Sailor Guy Bernardin was rescued by the Chilean naval vessel Rancagua after his boat sank while he was trying to sail singlehanded from New York to San Francisco.

Bernardin, a naturalized U.S. citizen from France, was attempting to break the record of 89 days 8 hours set in 1854 by the 229-foot clipper ship Flying Cloud, with Captain Josiah Creesy and a crew of 44 aboard.

Bernardin, 44, was about 250 miles from Cape Horn and 10 days ahead of schedule on Thursday when his mast broke, punching a hole in the hull. The boat sank six hours later, but Bernardin inflated a life raft and was rescued 18 hours later.
