What if you have an AIDS benefit and not enough corporate donors donate? That seems to be Elizabeth Taylor’s problem in Miami, where she is hosting a $5,000-a-head, star-studded gala on Sunday to raise money for AIDS care and research. It now appears, say organizers, that the fund-raiser won’t reach its $3-million goal because corporate donors are balking. “We would have liked to have had a major corporate donor shake Elizabeth Taylor’s hand and present her with a large check, but I couldn’t get anybody,” said Jane Fincher, who is in charge of obtaining corporate donations for the all-day event. Three corporations have given $60,000, said Al Evans, chairman of the Community Alliance Against AIDS, a fund-raising arm of the University of Miami School of Medicine and co-sponsor of the event. More than $1.5 million has been raised through pledges and donations, he said. “We were led to believe that (the corporations) cared,” Evans said. “But they’re still not brave enough.”
