Responses to Vietnam War Draft Dodgers 20 Years Later

It is interesting to read the “holier-than-thou” comments in the letters from what is, I’m sure, a mix of veterans and non-veterans of that era. Personally, I have respect for both the veteran and the conscience-driven draft dodgers.

When I left a tour of duty in Vietnam in 1965, a limited portion of my service comrades and myself were already concerned about the U.S. involvement in that country. Some of those service buddies became involved with the anti-war effort subsequent to leaving the service. A few actively supporting draft resistance and draft avoidance.

I’m very proud of the fact that we have a system where a grass-roots national conscience can make a difference. If that were not the case, like the Soviets in Afghanistan, we might still be there!
