A fire ignited by a hydrogen gas leak at the Chevron oil refinery in El Segundo on Saturday was extinguished by workers at the plant, but 18 firefighters from the El Segundo Fire Department remained at the scene for 20 minutes to ensure that the flames were out, firefighters said. No injuries were reported.

The fire was reported at 12:10 p.m. in the low-sulfur fuel section of the plant, said Capt. Jim O’Brien of the El Segundo Fire Department.

“They had a leak in one of the flanges, or valves, and it ignited,” O’Brien said. “There was a little bit of damage to the surrounding pipe and installation but the fire was refined to that area. The hydrogen was still escaping but the flames were diminished by the time we got there.”

Firefighters kept water on the pipe until the hydrogen gas was shut off and the source of the hydrogen leak was found, O’Brien said. The fire at the refinery, at 324 W. El Segundo Blvd., was under investigation.
