Gencorp reported income of $17 million for the first quarter, the same as in the year-ago period. Sales rose 55% to $468 million at the Akron, Ohio, company, which is a technology-based operation with strong positions in aerospace, automotive and related polymer products. The firm said an increase in Aerojet shipments and the sale of RKO Pictures, which resulted in an after-tax gain of about $5 million, were offset by higher interest expense due to the restructuring begun in May, 1987, and by the absence of income from operations sold after that time.
