Olympic champion Alberto Tomba of Italy rallied to win his fourth World Cup slalom race in five starts this season, beating surprising Felix McGrath of the United States at Are, Sweden.

The victory moved Tomba to the top of the World Cup overall standings with 249 points. Pirmin Zurbriggen of Switzerland finished 17th and remained at 236 points.

Tomba was fifth after the first run, .38 of a second off the lead. He covered the second run in 51.51 seconds, giving him a winning total of 1 minute 41.41 seconds. McGrath, who stood fourth after the morning run, had the second-best time in the second run of 51.77 to finish .22 of a second back.
