Computer industry analysts said Apple Computer Inc. may have a difficult time proving that software programs created by Hewlett-Packard Co. and Microsoft Corp. infringe on Apple copyrights. The reason they give is that the rival companies’ software programs, while creating a similar look, are not actually pirating the computer code used to make Apple’s Macintosh computer so easy to use. Apple filed suit against Hewlett-Packard and Microsoft last week, claiming their New Wave and Windows version 2.03 computer programs duplicate Macintosh’s audio visual display--or the way the user interacts with the computer through, for example, the Macintosh’s controlling “mouse” device.
