Anglican Church leaders rallied behind black Archbishop Desmond M. Tutu, who was criticized last week by South African President Pieter W. Botha for his anti-apartheid activism. At a meeting in Johannesburg, 19 bishops declared their support for Tutu and criticized the government for cracking down on peaceful dissent. The statement came as the government shut down the weekly New Nation, an anti-apartheid newspaper launched by the Southern African Catholic Bishops Conference, for three months for publishing material that allegedly promotes revolution. The paper’s editor, Zwelakhe Sisulu, has been detained without charge for 16 months.
