Nevada prison guards in a “need to know” status will be told what convicts are infected with the AIDS virus, under a controversial regulation adopted today by the state Prison Board.

Prison Director George Sumner said the information will be limited to guards in medical clinics and housing units, search and escort officers and shift officers who respond to emergencies such as fights or stabbings.

Sumner also said the State of Nevada Employees Assn., which had threatened to sue to provide the list to guards, agreed to the regulation which was worked out by Atty. Gen. Brian McKay’s staff.
