Soviet Armenia’s government ordered the dissolution today of a committee agitating for annexation of a region in neighboring Azerbaijan. Soldiers and helicopters patrolled tense Yerevan, the capital, in case of trouble.

The Kremlin declared this week that the campaign for annexation of the Nagorno-Karabakh region was “intolerable.” Public protests had been called for Saturday in Yerevan, but radio broadcasts in Armenia and Azerbaijan warned citizens of both Caucasus republics today against illegal demonstrations. The broadcasts announced new regulations requiring permits 10 days in advance for all public gatherings.
