A Milan sports newspaper reported that an investigation by the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI) is believed to have found that Italian officials arranged the long jump result at the 1987 World Track and Field Championships to ensure that countryman Giovanni Evangelisti won the bronze medal.
According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Italy’s largest sports daily, an inquiry conducted by CONI officials found that Italian judges arranged the measurement of the jump--27 feet 6 inches--that gave Evangelisti third place at Rome’s Olympic Stadium last September.
The report was not immediately confirmed by CONI officials, who said the result of the investigation would be made public today.
Evangelisti, who claimed he was unaware of any irregularity, said he is ready to give back the bronze medal to the IAAF.
