Taking Care of Own

Plaudits to Ruth Ryon for her “For American Immigrants, Housing Costs Pose a Hurdle” (March 20). It informs the community that Armenians do take care of their own, as all good groups should. Although there are numerous differences among Armenian circles in religion, politics, social issues, they are united in the sense that they do rally to a worthy cause affecting their identity.

And surely, survival in L. A. falls into that category, and I was pleased to see this point come through in Ryon’s article.

Another point that pleases me is the gratitude expressed by these newcomers. Despite the difficulties they encounter, they are trying to make their way in earning a livelihood as well as surviving in houses and apartments. After all, survival is part and parcel of the Armenian ethos.
