Junior Lifeguard Applications Offered

Applications for a five-week Junior Lifeguard program for youths 10 to 17 are available from the county Department of Beaches and Harbors, according to Supervisor Deane Dana.

Boys and girls who qualify by passing a timed swimming test will be eligible for morning or afternoon weekday instructional courses scheduled July 5 through Aug. 6.

Classes will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. South Bay classes will be offered in Torrance, Manhattan Beach and Hermosa Beach.

County lifeguards will provide instruction in swimming, water safety, body and board surfing, lifesaving and rescue techniques, first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation, physical conditioning and water-related competitive skills.

Morning qualifying swim tests will be held June 18 at Redondo High School, 631 Vincent Park.

Completed applications and checks or money orders for the $130 enrollment fee must be submitted at the time an applicant takes the swim test. The enrollment fee also covers costs for a swim suit and Junior Lifeguard T-shirt.
