U.S. Warship Will Enter Canal Today

WASHINGTON —
The Pentagon, breaking its normal silence about ship movements, said Monday that the helicopter carrier Okinawa will begin a transit of the Panama Canal today.
The Pentagon said its statement was issued in hopes of avoiding rumors in Panama that the carrier’s presence might have something to do with American pressure for the ouster of Panamanian strongman Manuel A. Noriega.
