U.S. District Judge Barrington D. Parker has ordered Eastern Airlines to stop the training of non-union pilots aboard its aircraft by a cargo carrier that was hired to help the company prepare for a possible strike this spring. Parker granted a preliminary injunction sought by the Air Line Pilots Assn. to prevent Eastern from leasing as many as five of its aircraft to Orion Lift Services Inc. to train non-union pilots in case of a strike. Parker ruled that the training program “constitutes a unilateral repudiation of the collective bargaining agreement” Eastern has with the pilots union. So far only one aircraft has been leased to Orion to train non-union pilots.
