Glendora : Moratorium Extended
The City Council has extended until February the moratorium prohibiting metal-plating firms from locating in the city’s eastern industrial area.
A 45-day moratorium was passed by the council Feb. 9 in the wake of an accident at Plato Products Inc. Acetic acid mist from a nickel-plating tank escaped from the plant Jan. 7 and caused 100 children at an adjacent elementary school in San Dimas to become ill.
Plato later reached agreement with the South Coast Air Quality Management District to cease metal-plating operations by Sept. 1 and to restrict such operations to nights and weekends until then.
The acid leak prompted the Bonita Unified School District, which serves San Dimas and La Verne, to launch an effort to close the plating plant.
While the moratorium is in effect, Glendora officials plan to conduct a land-use study and environmental review of the city’s eastern industrial area to determine what types of plants should be permitted there.
