After five days of such things as lunchtime athletic events, a dawn hop, bids to “buy a buddy,” sponge tosses and basketball throws, Anaheim’s Ball Junior High School raised a record $4,327.65 for its annual United Way fund drive.

Activities director Alden E. Esping, known to students as Mr. E, said most of the money was raised in 25-cent increments, the cost for the seventh- and eighth-graders to take part in some events, including such spirited activities as three-legged and wheelbarrow races.

Other events included a tug of war and Volkswagen push.
